Hello, I'm Julian Cabezas, LCSW | He/They

My therapeutic approach builds upon fundamental blocks of nervous system awareness to cultivate something more transformative: a state of profound presence and dual awareness. In this space, clients develop the capacity to simultaneously feel their bodily sensations while articulating their narrative—maintaining connection to themselves as they tell their story. Crucially, our intention is never to change or fix the client, but rather to bring awareness coupled with resilience, which naturally creates meaningful difference. This dual awareness becomes the essential process through which healing unfolds, allowing clients to witness their experience without becoming overwhelmed by it and to exercise their own discernment about what's actually happening within them. By fostering this delicate balance between embodied feeling and conscious narration, clients discover new pathways for integration and growth that weren't previously accessible when caught in reactive patterns. My modality of choice is Internal Family Systems, it's a compassion & curious forward practice. In Internal Family Systems therapy, we work with the understanding that your mind naturally contains different "parts" – like the critical voice, the pleaser, or the worried one – each trying to help you in their own way. Together, we'll get to know these parts with kindness, acknowledging how they've tried to protect you, while connecting with your calm, curious, and compassionate core Self. As you build this relationship with all aspects of yourself, healing happens naturally – not by forcing change, but by bringing awareness and understanding to your inner world at a pace that feels right for you. Additionally I approach EMDR therapy with somatic interventions, creating a comprehensive treatment that addresses trauma held in both mind and body by tracking sensations, deepening awareness, and developing healthy boundaries. By honoring the body's innate healing capacities through mindful attention to physical sensations and nervous system regulation, we work together to release traumatic experiences without overwhelming or re-traumatizing you. This somatic-focused EMDR approach empowers you to develop greater self-regulation, process trauma at your own pace, and ultimately transform post-traumatic stress into an opportunity for profound healing and growth. During the academic year, I am a Practicum Instructor for graduate students and provide clinical supervision to fellow therapists. I have worked in LGBTQ+, BIPOC, Latina/e/o and HIV+ spaces for over 15 years, I began as a community organizer early in my teens which led to my interest in emotional awareness, conflict navigation and values based action. As a trauma survivor, I am grateful that I got to stay alive long enough to see how drastically different life can be when not plagued by constant feelings of emotional pain. Recovery and feeling better than before is possible-I hope to share this path with others to create peace within ourselves and partnerships. I think the best way to see how we'd connect is by meeting, I provide complimentary 15 minute consultations for people. Even if we aren't a match based on time and style, I work with a team of therapists and love to help connect. Feel free to fill out the contact form below and I'll be in touch.
